Sierra Regional Ski for Light (SRSFL) pairs cross country skiers, snowshoe and hikers with visually impaired persons to experience thrilling outdoor activities. A visually impaired skier described herself as smiling with her whole body during SRSFL events. If you are an experienced cross country skier, snow shoeing adventurer or hiker come train to guide a blind or visually impaired person. It is a wonderful way for you to share your love of the outdoors with visually impaired persons who need sighted guides.
SRSFL welcomes donations. The SRSFL relies on donations to provide transportation to/from events and keep the events affordable for the visually impaired persons. SRSFL is an all volunteer non-profit under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.
Each year SRSFL organizes 1-day and 3-day cross country skiing, and snowshoeing events for visually impaired persons. Each visually impaired person has a trained volunteer guide. We offer a 1-day mandatory training for new volunteer guides . All winter events, including the new guides training, are held at the Tahoe Donner Adventure Center in Truckee.

In addition to the winter events, every year the SRSFL organizes a 3-day hiking event for visually impaired hikers. The hikers are paired with 1-to-1 volunteer guides. The hikes are on trails located in the Truckee and Tahoe area.
Both the winter and summer 3-day events offer mind, body and spirit adventure. Visually impaired persons and some of the guides stay together at the same Truckee hotel, eat dinners together and ride in a chartered bus to the events.
Some visually impaired persons rely solely on Social Security Income (SSI), so affordable events are necessary in order for them to attend. The biggest expense is transportation. The SRSFL charters a bus to provide transportation while in Truckee and to transport our-of-town participants who have gathered in Sacramento to/from Truckee. The SRSFL also assists with transportation when needed to/from the Reno/Sparks area.
The SRSFL provides partial scholarships when needed to first time and second time participating visually impaired persons who ask for financial assistance.
Mission
The concept of Ski for Light began in Norway around 1955 by Erling Stordahl, a blind man, who wanted to start a program to teach cross country skiing to visually impaired persons. Every year Norway Ski for Light organizes a week-long cross country skiing event which is attended by about 1000 persons from throughout the world.
Ski for Light came to the U.S. in 1975 under the national organization based in Minnesota. National Ski for Light holds a annual week-long cross country skiing event attended by about 250 persons from the U.S. and other countries.
Sierra Regional Ski for Light (SRSFL) began in 1993, offering visually impaired persons in the Sierra Region with an opportunity to cross country ski. The SRSFL mission has not changed in the 34 years since its beginning. The mission of SRSFL is to introduce and promote participation in vigorous outdoor activities by visually impaired persons in partnership with sighted persons. SRSFL receives no financial assistance from the international and national Ski for Light organizations. SRSFL is asking for financial support in order to keep the annual events affordable and accessible for visually impaired persons.
