Mission
Suicide Prevention Through Mental Health Education & Action
Background
Founded in memory of three-time Olympian, Jeret “Speedy” Peterson who grew up in Boise, ID, and later moved to Park City, UT to train with the U.S. Ski Team. As an athlete, he was successful at the highest level of his sport, winning an Olympic silver medal in Vancouver in 2010 and capturing the hearts of fans worldwide with his trademark quintuple-twisting triple flip, “The Hurricane.”
While a loving, caring, outgoing person, Jeret also battled with his mental health and struggled with substance abuse; he took his own life in July of 2011 at the age of 29. In the Fall of 2011, in the spirit of Jeret’s own passion of giving to others, The Speedy Foundation was developed by his family and friends to prevent others from death by despair.
Our Work
We advocate for mental health education and action to end the stigma surrounding mental health. We serve Truckee/North Lake Tahoe, CA, as well as communities in Idaho and Utah. We have made an impact at the national and internatationl levels through Speedy's legacy, our resources, and advocacy efforts. The Speedy Foundation offers mental health training opportunities; click here to access one of our complimentary e-learning trainings. In the Tahoe region, the Speedy Foundation is contracted with Placer and Nevada Counties to provide suicide prevention and opioid overdose prevention programming. We are the umbrella organization for the Tahoe Truckee Suicide Prevention Coalition.
