The Tahoe Rim Trail Association was formed in 1981 in response to a great community dream to build a trail following the ridgeline circling Lake Tahoe. Over the next two decades, working in partnership with the US Forest Service, we built a world-class 165-mile loop trail by engaging our community and thousands of volunteers to assist in the Trail’s construction. The initial loop was completed in 2001 and since then we've been dedicated to expanding, improving and maintaining the trail which is now a 200-mile system. We work tirelessly to provide a world-class trail experience for over 400,000 annual users so that everyone can experience Tahoe’s iconic landscapes, charismatic fauna, and captivating flora today and in the future!
Our mission is to maintain and enhance the Tahoe Rim Trail System, practice and inspire stewardship, and preserve access to the natural beauty of the Lake Tahoe Region. To achieve our mission, we operate two main programs: Trail Operations and Outdoor Education.
Trail Operations includes ongoing trail maintenance, improvement projects and preservation work on the over 200 miles of trail that make up the Tahoe Rim Trail system. This is accomplished through the support of hundreds of annual volunteers at twice-weekly trail building and maintenance workdays and multi-day overnight backcountry work camps.
Outdoor Education provides opportunities for the public to experience Lake Tahoe's backcountry through offerings including skills courses, guided hikes, youth programs, medical trainings, and educational talks.
Additionally, we provide public information on the Trail and Tahoe recreation in general through our website tahoerimtrail.org and via phone, email, and inquiries at our office in Stateline, NV. Our staff and board monitors, reviews, and provides comments on a variety of different land management decisions, proposed developments, legislation, etc. that could potentially impact the Tahoe Rim Trail and/or the Tahoe Rim Trail experience.
